Google brings RSS feeds, and adsense text ads to Gmail; Official Google Blog: A cure for the common inbox

Official Google Blog: A cure for the common inbox

I think this is following the Yahoo additions to thier email system, but is a sneaky way to get adsense ads delivered to everyone’s inbox, well outside the box really. Some will see this as google soam, some will see it as relevant supplemental info”, some will see it as a privacy issue and add it to the anti-google crusade, marketers will see it as an opportunity to get thier message out in more places, corporations will scramble to check up on what people are clicking in thier Gmail boxes, and google may have come up with a way to get ads in a space without tramlping on the page space too much, since they say:

Gmail tips and relevant text ads appear from time to time as well.

Time will tell if people are annoyed by the text ads in Gmail and choose another email service, or if google has struck the right balance of content vs ads vs usability… time will tell.

Testing Wordpress Photo Plugin

Posted in General, Software and Web Apps at 4:47 pm by Administrator

This is the first test of our our newest wordpress plug in, Photopress, by Isaac Wedin. So far the install has gone as expected, and the details in the install file are well done.

We are anticipating a smooth add image to post at this point, and with a little luck, this plug in will work fine with the template we are currently using so we won’t have to go in and edit any php files ;-)

Global 2005 Logo

Great big thanks to all the folks who have contributed to this excellent plug in;

Florian Jung’s Image Browser, Owen Winkler’s Edit Button Template (now Alex King’s JS Quicktags), and the built-in Wordpress upload functions. Many people have contributed bug reports and fixes, including Roge, Randy, RobotDan?, Alex, and Frank. Claus contributed code and ideas for the database functions. Thanks![photopress:globalmedia12_9_05_Blue139x220_jpg.jpg,full,centered]

Web 2.0 sites

Posted in General at 4:08 am by Administrator

For those of you have heard of Myspace, Web 2.0, the social web, etc, and are wondering what all the buzzis about, I’d like to point you to a couple of sites that are doing just that…

First off Flickr, Flicker is a site that has recently been bought out by yahoo, but is mainly aplace to upload your photos and organize them… once you start adding “tags” that is descriptive words to your photos, you are making the Web 2.0, the scoial netwrok.. everyday users, human beings, adding thier thoughts to content, be it pictures, stories, videos, web pages, etc.

Speaking of adding tags to web pages, we could see a whole new search engine battle emerge with what yahoo is doing with WEb 2.0… You have to log intot your yahoo account to do it, but once you do, you select the sites you want to tag (yahoo myweb), and add some keyword to them, you can set it so that other people can see what you have tagged, and you can view other people’s public site tags, and everyone enjoys a better search, well that’s the goal annyhow..

Want to join a community of people who are all looking to tag everything. no I’m not talking about local grafitti artists, but you may find a few of the there, check out tagworld. Kind of a myspace meets tag 2.0, it’s a nice idea that seems to be catching on…

There are many more places springing up trying to get an audience for thier Web 2.0 ideas, places such as www.me.com, and others are trying hard. Some people would say what they are doing at suprglu.com is similar, and I agree that it is new, but not exactly what web 2.0 was suppose to be about.. but we’ll all see where this all goes!

We launched Google Sitemaps this past summer as a way for webmasters to give us information we could use to better crawl their sites. Since then, we’ve been adding to the kinds of information we give back. In our latest release, we provide even more interesting statistics that webmasters can use to improve the way their pages work with web crawlers, which will ultimately benefit their visitors.

Interactive Mobile TV Test Is Planned - Yahoo! News

Interactive Mobile TV Test Is Planned - Yahoo! News
During the six-week test, which started Monday, users can download a program for watching and interacting with the Norwegian youth music program “Svisj” on their mobile phones.

Users can vote for the next music video by pressing a mobile phone key, and chat in writing with each other or the program leaders while watching the show.

Espen Torgersen, a telecommunications analyst with the Carnegie Investment Bank AB, said the extent of interaction of the system may be new, but that many similar projects are under way.

“It’s an area that is in its very early stages,” he said. “It may have potential but it means nothing to us right now. It could be something if it catches on.”

Gunnar Garfors, director of mobile services for the state broadcaster NRK, said hundreds of viewers downloaded the free software during the first week of the test.

“We see it as something that can be used in other programs,” Garfors told The Associated Press. “When the tests are completed we will evaluate the results … for future commercial use.”

“Our solution makes it possible for viewers to interact with a show that they are watching on their mobile device in a whole new way, creating a much richer TV experience with the help of the mobile channel,” said Kurt Sillen, vice president of Ericsson Mobility World.
