Podcasting News: 25% of Internet Users to Listen to Podcasts in Next 6 Months
25% of Internet Users to Listen to Podcasts in Next 6 Months
March 24, 2006
The British Market Research Bureau (BMRB) reports that a quarter of all adult internet users will listen to a podcast in the next 6 months.
“The findings suggest that up to 7.9 million adults could be downloading podcasts in the next 6 months, which represents a massive opportunity for advertisers and media owners alike,†said BMRB marketing director Steve Cooke.
The report is based on a national (UK) survey of 1,000 adults in February 2006.
Among adult internet users, 17% have downloaded a podcast in the last 6 months (rising to 28% among 16-24 year olds) and 24% are likely to download a podcast in the next 6 months, according to BMRB. Those owning an MP3 player are more likely to have downloaded a podcast (28%) with up to 38% likely to download a podcast in the next 6 months.
The BMRB found that podcasting is more likely to be a male activity, with male internet users almost twice as likely (22%) as females (12%) to have downloaded a podcast.

Logo Design
We had a lot of interest in the earlier post about logo design from fizbang, and today we came across another great page siting examples of great logo design and the creation process inolved…
Designing a logo is one of the most challenging assignments in creating a brand identity. From the initial sketches to the final MontRED logo, it has been quite an exciting journey.
When we started designing the logo in the early part of January 2005, it was important that we first understood MontRED as a brand. MontRED is an online retailer of fine jewelry (just wanted to be sure that you know this so that we can put things into proper context).
We started with long discussions with the founding team to understand their vision of MontRED. The absolute transparency within the team made this process a little easier.
Read the whole artocle with great pictures and examples at the montred blog.

Adware backers named and shamed | The Register
Large corporations and dot.com firms are funding the distribution of software that loads invasive pop-up ads with their advertising dollars, according to a report by the Centre for Democracy and Technology.
The US consumer rights organisation named and shamed a number of firms over the practice, including Club Med Americas, uBid, PeoplePC and GreetingCards.com. It is calling on mainstream firms to become more vigilant about policing their advertising practices.

In its report Following the Money: How Advertising Dollars Encourage Nuisance and Harmful Adware and What Can be Done to Reverse the Trend, CDT explains how the adware works through a complicated series of middlemen to persuade advertisers to pay for ads generated by unwanted advertising software or “adware”.
In most instances, surfers unintentionally install adware after visiting maliciously constructed websites or responding to online solicitations. The CDT report (PDF) documents the financial relationship between one unscrupulous adware distributor and mainstream firms.
“Knowingly or not, these companies are fueling the spread of unwanted programs that clog people’s computers, threaten privacy, and tarnish the internet experience for millions,” CDT deputy director Ari Schwartz said. “Because the adware financing model is willfully convoluted, many companies may not know where their advertising dollars are ending up. We’re urging those advertisers to be more vigilant to ensure that they aren’t unwittingly bankrolling one of the internet’s fastest-growing problems.”
Several organisations, including the Interactive Travel Services Association, Dell and Verizon, have established policies that prohibit or discourage the use of nuisance or harmful adware in serving ads. CDT wants to see these policies adopted by other advertisers. It also wants corporates to monitor the advertising practices of their marketing affiliates.
Earlier this year, CDT filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission alleging that 180solutions, engaged in a “pattern of unfair and deceptive trade practices”. In its latest report, CDT looked at firms that advertised through 180solutions, and enquired about why their marketing messages were been propagated using 180solutions’ advertising software.
Two of the firms identified responded to CDT’s requests by establishing ad placement policies, and five more said they already had policies in place. Eleven others - Altrec, Club Med Americas, GreetingCards.com, LetsTalk.com, NetZero, PeoplePC, PerfectMatch, ProFlowers, True.com, uBid and Waterfront Media - failed to respond to CDT’s request for information about their ad placement policies. CDT said firms that support nuisance or harmful adware with their advertising dollars deserve increased scrutiny.
“The time is now for companies to take a more active role in policing their own online advertising activity,” CDT deputy director Schwartz said. “Although unscrupulous adware companies bear the greatest blame for the spread of the unwanted programs, those programs wouldn’t exist without advertising dollars to fund them. We need to cut that revenue stream off at the source.”
180Solutions rejects CDT’s criticism over its business practices. “We object to the overall premise that consumers are duped into installing our software,” 180Solutions chief executive Keith Smith told The Washington Post. “It’s no different from what’s on television. People are paying for this content by agreeing to some ads.”

PodTech.Network, a podcast content provider, announced today that it has received $5.5 million in Series A funding from Venrock Associates, US Venture Partners (USVP), and Silicon Valley angel investors.
PodTech podcasts InfoTalk, a podcast that features interviews with experts in the area of information technology.
“With this financing we are now poised to deliver on our content development goals and to play a big role in the evolving ecosystem of this new media,” said PodTech founder John Furrier.
In the past few months PodTech has expanded the InfoTalk model to include a new set of podcast media offerings. With this financing announcement, PodTech is launching the following media properties:
* PodTech News: Dedicated independent podcasting news team
* PodTech InfoTalk Network: Dedicated set of PodTech original and 3rd party podcasting content
* PodTech Sponsorship Network: Aggregated set of sponsors and paid content
“Traditional ways of reaching customers with television and radio are costing more and more money and becoming less and less valuable because their audience is declining,” said Paul Matteucci, Partner at US Venture Partners. “The opportunity to get rid of the middleman and deal directly with customers and prospects is very attractive and PodTech can do that through the net and podcasting,” he added.

Mobilecasting Update: New App Publishes Podcasts from Pocket PCs
AcroDesign Technologies today released AudioBay, a podcasting application for Windows Mobile Pocket PCs. The software lets users record a podcast episode using the Pocket PC’s built-in recorder and upload it to a Web over a wireless Internet connection for immediate access by the public.
“We are excited to release the first software to allow mobile users to create and publish podcasts,†said AcroDesign’s Scott Thibault. “AudioBay enables anyone to become a broadcaster with their own portable recording studio.â€
The software publishes podcasts to AcroDesign’s servers. 12 months free hosting is included in the software purchase.
Podcasting is the creation and distribution of audio files using RSS feeds, letting users download individual podcasts or subscribe to a podcast feed. AudioBay is designed to make this process simple and mobile: users can record podcasts from anywhere and the software saves the audio in a file and then uploads it to the AcroDesign Technologies’ hosting service. As soon as the podcast is uploaded it will be available to the public as an RSS feed to download and play on desktop PCs or mobile MP3 players.
AudioBay retails for $24.95 and is available immediately VoiceAtom.com.
