From two very interesting, very blunt blog articles written by E L Frederick, and Information Security Professional, about online saftey and internet common sense.. Then some info about online issues myspace and similar social networking site horror stories.. Drama, not reality drama, real drama.
E L Frederick - General: Operational Security for the Home (PART I)
posting to their blogs on sites such as MySpace and Xanga. However, all too often we are taking to banning them from using the sites instead of educating them on the importance of Operation Security (OPSEC).
Banning the usage of the sites is not going to fix the problem. It is going to make the problem worse. It will give the sites a stigma of being “cool†and “rebelliousâ€. We need to empower our children thru education, not leave them to fend for themselves in a hostile world foundering in ignorance.
…
As parents we begin to teach OPSEC to our children at a young age when they begin to answer the phone. We teach them not to say “My parents aren’t homeâ€, but to use, “They aren’t available right now†instead. The difference is slight, but one could mean that my parents are asleep or outside, or in an argument, as apposed to not home.
…
For instance, I just did a Google search for “Mike Borden PAâ€. Mike Borden was one of Kara Beth Borden’s parents. He was killed by David Ludwig a few weeks before the writing of this article.
…
he places another message on Xanga that says that he and the family are going to be going to Disney World and aren’t going to be home for a week.
Your son, unwittingly, just provided someone with an opportunity to break into your house while you’re away. They have both the address and the window of opportunity sitting in front of them on your son’s Xanga blog.
Something as innocent as a post saying “Hey, DogBoy005, my folks aren’t going to be home tonight, why don’t we get together and rent a movie.†Suddenly take on a whole new meaning when viewed thru the eyes of a predator.
E L’s posts are worth reading and sharing..

Perusing the web today, I came across an exciting development, it looks like wordpress 2.0 is very close to a final release. We are loving the wordpress 1.5, and have yet to finish testing out every feature, theme and plugin that we can get our hands on. If 2.0 is better than 1.5 I can’t see any other blogging software very catching up to wordpress - it’s just awesome.
boren.nu » WordPress 2.0 Release Candidate 3
Then, we click over to Andy’s blog, and find that a new feature in wordpress 2.0 will basically allow you set an application to run with specific files when you upload files such as mp3s and images, that’s right wordpress will be set to take images and audio files (I am assuming video too), auto add to the database and create a post for it, so that you can call the image or audio file into a post, and there is a thumbnail option which will allow you set up an image to go along with your audio file - so this is going to be a big plus for podcasters, or blog broadcasters indeed!
After clicking over to the example Andy used I see the photo handling is really quite brilliant, get ready for an even more powerful wordpress soon!
Can’t wait for the final version!
(and now to see if the plug ins and themes will have any compatability issues?!)

This is the first test of our our newest wordpress plug in, Photopress, by Isaac Wedin. So far the install has gone as expected, and the details in the install file are well done.
We are anticipating a smooth add image to post at this point, and with a little luck, this plug in will work fine with the template we are currently using so we won’t have to go in and edit any php files

Great big thanks to all the folks who have contributed to this excellent plug in;
Florian Jung’s Image Browser, Owen Winkler’s Edit Button Template (now Alex King’s JS Quicktags), and the built-in Wordpress upload functions. Many people have contributed bug reports and fixes, including Roge, Randy, RobotDan?, Alex, and Frank. Claus contributed code and ideas for the database functions. Thanks![photopress:globalmedia12_9_05_Blue139x220_jpg.jpg,full,centered]

For those of you have heard of Myspace, Web 2.0, the social web, etc, and are wondering what all the buzzis about, I’d like to point you to a couple of sites that are doing just that…
First off Flickr, Flicker is a site that has recently been bought out by yahoo, but is mainly aplace to upload your photos and organize them… once you start adding “tags” that is descriptive words to your photos, you are making the Web 2.0, the scoial netwrok.. everyday users, human beings, adding thier thoughts to content, be it pictures, stories, videos, web pages, etc.
Speaking of adding tags to web pages, we could see a whole new search engine battle emerge with what yahoo is doing with WEb 2.0… You have to log intot your yahoo account to do it, but once you do, you select the sites you want to tag (yahoo myweb), and add some keyword to them, you can set it so that other people can see what you have tagged, and you can view other people’s public site tags, and everyone enjoys a better search, well that’s the goal annyhow..
Want to join a community of people who are all looking to tag everything. no I’m not talking about local grafitti artists, but you may find a few of the there, check out tagworld. Kind of a myspace meets tag 2.0, it’s a nice idea that seems to be catching on…
There are many more places springing up trying to get an audience for thier Web 2.0 ideas, places such as www.me.com, and others are trying hard. Some people would say what they are doing at suprglu.com is similar, and I agree that it is new, but not exactly what web 2.0 was suppose to be about.. but we’ll all see where this all goes!

Duke University
The Chronicle: Wired Campus Blog: Invasion of the iPod People
For spring 2006, the university expects 1,200 students to use the iPods in class, up from 280 last year, and 42 courses will incorporate the technology, up from 19 last year. More types of courses are using iPods as well, the university says. Beyond foreign languages and computer science, medical physics, mathematics, and dance courses are using the devices.

Official Google Blog: Knowledge is power

We launched Google Sitemaps this past summer as a way for webmasters to give us information we could use to better crawl their sites. Since then, we’ve been adding to the kinds of information we give back. In our latest release, we provide even more interesting statistics that webmasters can use to improve the way their pages work with web crawlers, which will ultimately benefit their visitors.
